The Academy congratulates its Fellows who have been recognised at The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) awards 2014.

Professor Sharyn Roach Anleu (left) received an Outstanding Service to TASA award, while Emeritus Professor Riaz Hassan received a Distinguished Service to Australian Sociology award. The Outstanding Service  Award is given to a TASA member who has demonstrated an outstanding level of participation in and promotion of TASA over a number of years. The Distinguished Service award, meanwhile, is made to a TASA member who has demonstrated outstanding, significant and sustained service to Australian sociology over many years.

The Academy congratulates Professor Philip Pettit FASSA who has been awarded the David and Elaine Spitz Prize for his 2012 book On the People’s Terms: A Republican Theory and Model of Democracy. The Spitz prize is awarded by The International Conference for the Study of Political Thought for the best book in liberal and/or democratic theory published two years earlier.

2014, July 22 Dr Neal Blewett honoured for bipartisan work against AIDS epidemic ...

The Academy congratulates former Labor health minister Dr Neal Blewett AC FASSA, and his then Liberal counterpart, Dr Peter Baume AC. They were presented with life governorships of the Kirby Institute for their joint work in combating the terrifying AIDS epidemic in Australia in the 1980s.

2014, July 17 Professor Simon Chapman's "plain packaging tobacco" strikes again ...

Smoking rates over the past three years have seen the biggest drops ever recorded. "This is champagne-cork pulling time", Professor Simon Chapman of the University of sydney's School of  Public Health said on Thursday.

The Academy is proud to announce that four of its Fellows were recognised as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours for 2014.



Companion (AC) in the General Division:

The Honourable Dr Barry Owen Jones AO, for eminent service to the community as a leading intellectual in Australian public life, through contributions to scientific, heritage, musical, medical, political and public health organisations, and to the Parliament.



Officer (AO) in the General Division:

Professor Peter Bishop Dixon, for distinguished service to education in the field of applied economics as an academic, researcher and author, through significant contributions to policy analysis and modelling.



Member (AM) in the General Division:

Dr Tim Bonyhady, for significant service to education in climate and environmental law, as an academic and researcher, and to the visual arts.

Dr Barbara Caine, for significant service to tertiary education, particularly gender studies, and as a role model and mentor.

The Academy congratulates Professor Peter Shergold AC, FASSA who was appointed head of TEQSA Council. Professor Peter Shergold AC, FASSA was appointed to head the new council to advise the government on cutting red tape within the national higher education regulator, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency. Professor Shergold, who is also chancellor of the University of Western Sydney, will be joined by Standards Panel chairman Alan Robson.

The Academy congratulates Professor Janeen Baxter FASSA, ARC Professorial Fellow at The University of Queensland (UQ) Institute for Social Science Research and School of Social Science, who will lead a new, multi-million dollar Centre of Excellence aiming to break the cycle of social disadvantage felt across generations within families - The Life Course Centre.



The Life Course Centre will include leading Australian and international researchers from institutions including the Universities of Melbourne, Sydney, Western Australia and Pennsylvania.



The $20 million in Australian Research Council (ARC) funding awarded to the Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course (Life Course Centre) represents the largest grant ever received for a UQ-led social sciences initiative and the only Centre awarded by the ARC in the social sciences.
