The Academy congratulates Professor Lenore Manderson FASSA, who was awarded the American Anthropological Association, Society for Medical Anthropology Career Achievement Award. The award honors an individual who has advanced the field of medical anthropology through career-long contributions to theory or method, and who has been successful in communicating the relevance of medical anthropology to broader publics.
The award was announced with the following summary:
"Lenore's wide-ranging and effective promotion of medical anthropology at high levels in the global health agency architecture in so many different capacities is unique and has profoundly improved our subdiscipline’s engagement with policymakers, implementers, and agenda setters."
The Academy also congratulates Professor Manderson on her election to the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). Professor Manderson was one of 38 leading scientists inaugurated at the ASSAf annual Awards Ceremony on 12 October 2016.
As the official Academy of South Africa, ASSAf honours the country’s most outstanding scholars by electing them to Membership of the Academy. ASSAf Members are drawn from the full spectrum of disciplines.
